Second Generation [2G]

In the wireless context, second generation (2G) is used to identify the second generation of mobile air-interface technologies, which are digital rather than analog.

Two different 2G standards have been widely deployed in the United States: Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) and cdmaOne, which uses a code division multiple access (CDMA) modulation scheme. Europe mandated deployment of the GSM standard only. 2G technologies provided data rates up to 14.4 Kbps.
