Third Generation [3G]

In the wireless context, third generation (3G) is used to identify the third generation of mobile air-interface technologies. The Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) (e.g., HSPA+) and CDMA2000 (e.g., EVDO Rev. B) standards families are third generation standards. Both of these standards families use CDMA modulation schemes and both are comprised of multiple iterations of standards with varying capabilities.
